The architectural design by Threadgold Architecture is a retreat and refuge for retiring baby boomers exiting Perth after the lockdown. The client’s seaside site location is a stone’s throw from the Indian Ocean the lapping turquoise waters of Abbey Beach. Demolition of the existing 1970’s dilapidated home on the coastal fringe made way for the Abbey Beach house design. The residence shuns the adjoining properties while embracing the lower winter sun azimuth along the residence’s northern elevation.
The architectural design utilizes calculated deep eaves overhangs for summer sun protection and passive solar design heating during winter months. The design incorporates adjustable green tinted fenestration to capture the many hues of the coastal site. The single story did not limit the livability of the design by capturing the warm winter sun aspect. The architectural layout embraces passive solar design principles and connects the clients with their coastal clime.
The architectural design combines 300mm thick rammed limestone feature walls with Arte Domus mosaic tiling infills. Architectural elevations provide clear stain finish plywood eaves/ceilings to offset the rendered brickwork, steel and glass structure. The sloping skillion roof forms take cue from the undulating coastal dunes and provide dramatic height and raking ceilings to the entry corridor and interior living spaces.
The contemporary beach house aesthetic of the architectural layout, incorporates neutral beach tones and embraces indoor outdoor living. The layout provides two independent spaces separated by an acoustically sealed pivot door – plenty of room for the extended family. The residence is a respite for the owners and extended family while providing generous income through short-stay income tariffs.
